WALTHAMSTOW BUSINESS OWNERS EXPRESS THE NEED FOR FORTITUDE TO PROTECT THEMSELVES

The Vulnerability of a Business Owner
When you’re a business owner, your business is more than just a source of income. Your business is your entire livelihood. It represents hopes, dreams, investments, serving the community and making a positive impact on other people’s lives.
So what happens when this is threatened? Who’s there to back you? From our latest time in Walthamstow on Thursday 19th December we learnt more about the realities of some of the problems faced by local business owners. We also learnt more about the institutions designed to protect, inform and serve them.
We learnt from one coffee shop manager that their premises had been broken into three times in the last year. Not only that, but they had found their own home broken into, with little-to-no support from the police and the council. Yet when they tried to build a fence to protect themselves and their home, they actually found themselves being arrested!
Whether it’s the tyrannical enforcement of bureaucratic decisions, careless inaction or blatant incompetence, the general feeling is getting to the stage that there’s no point in even saying anything because no one listens.
It’s one thing to not be listened to, but it’s another thing to not use your voice. So why does this happen?
What Everyday Tyranny Looks Like
One business owner shared that the council does what they want and they don’t listen to anyone else. For instance, they noticed how during the COVID lockdown the local library was suddenly closed without warning and turned into temporary flats.
However, what’s evident is that people are hesitant and fearful to express how they really feel about the local authorities and the services they provide. The evil in the situation is that when anyone is vocal, then they are seen as ‘political’. A business owner shared how they are hesitant for them and their business to be ‘political’ because the government will create issues and potentially find ways to shut them down. A stall holder we spoke to shared their sensitivity of how easily someone can shut down your business, often without good reason.
We know this very well at Lighthouse Global when we saw the weaponisation of the Insolvency Service, all triggered by a tiny group of bitter ex-clients. We discovered firsthand how a government agency is set up to seek technicalities to justify their actions, rather than seek truth and justice.
In any case the process of any so-called ‘investigation’ is always a punishment. So what this means is that the everyday person lives in fear that their whole world could be turned upside-down because of a government agency seeking out a technicality that anyone could fall short on.

The Mainstream Media Compounds Tyranny Rather Than Confronts it
What we’ve seen in Walthamstow is how the mainstream media is always pointing out problems in others and never offering solutions. A number of people we spoke to expressed their distrust of the BBC and the mainstream media as a whole.
The BBC has paraded itself as an angel of light by publicising abuse in a local school and highlighting fraudulent food hygiene ratings in the area. Meanwhile it’s seen its own staff commit far worse atrocities whilst offering no solutions to either its own abuses, or the problems it’s broadcasted. This is quite incredible given that many BBC and media professionals live in Walthamstow!
Despite our own inadequacies, our attitude to problems is different. Where there’s a problem, we feel a responsibility not only to find the solution, but to seek out opportunities to serve and to build value. Catrin Nye and the BBC may have mocked this in their podcast A Very British Cult, yet they are seeing firsthand how this looks in practice through how we’ve responded to their abomination of a documythry.
It’s increasingly evident that the everyday person does not feel listened to by the institutions set up to serve them. One coffee shop owner, passionate about strengthening the local community through his business, was discussing the issue of crime. The question, “Who’s holding the authorities accountable?” grabbed their attention. They agreed that it ought to be the general public and yet they could see this is not happening in reality.
Over the last few weeks with our ongoing communication with the police we have been very grateful for their support of our presence in Walthamstow. We’ve also seen how stretched they are and how they simply don’t have the resources to tackle crime in the way they’d like. Again, the mainstream media is not offering any solutions and in some cases making the problem worse by draining police resources.
The Hope of Citizen Watch
What we have seen from our conversations with local residents in Walthamstow is that there are many persistent problems that are not being dealt with and it’s the everyday person on the street and the hardworking business owners who suffer.
Our fortitude comes from having the right people, in the right numbers coming together to do the right things to achieve the right results. No one else is currently offering that opportunity and we feel a deepening responsibility to empower ourselves and each other to face government and media tyranny.
We know there are at least a thousand local residents in Walthamstow who have expressed their dissatisfaction as to how their area and/or nation is being run. They’ve signed a national petition along with almost 3 million others, but there’s no other way their voice can be heard.
Walthamstow Citizen Agency, together with the associated Walthamstow Citizen Watch and Citizen Voice, are providing a new platform designed to confront tyrannical abuse of power in government and media. God designed institutions to perform meaningful roles in society, not for their power to be abused. We are very much pro-government and that comes from public accountability.

We pray for those in positions of power and influence who seek to serve themselves and their egos, rather than the public. We pray for them to know You, Your Grace,Your character and for them to repent. We do so for the sake of their eternity, their families and those who they have been given the opportunity to serve.
We give thanks to Your Son Jesus Christ who suffered immense persecution through slander, mocking, betrayal and crucifixion. He endured this immense suffering in order to atone for our sins.
We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ as our Lord, Saviour, Redeemer and King.

Conversations with business owners in Walthamstow revealed a clear sense of dissatisfaction with the local council, particularly regarding the lack of support in addressing issues such as crime and ensuring easy access for customers to their shops. Another notable concern was the significant lack of trust in the media, especially the BBC, with many feeling that the BBC does not provide truthful reporting. This aligns closely with our own experiences over the past few years and underscores the importance of holding both the media and government accountable for their actions.
