BBC Protests in Salford, Manchester With Organisers ‘Predator Awareness’

Manchester, UK – A small but determined group of protesters gathered yesterday outside the BBC offices at MediaCity in Salford, demanding accountability over the broadcaster’s deeply troubling history of covering up child abuse. Organised by Predator Awareness, a volunteer-led advocacy group that has been fighting for justice for over six years, the demonstration was not about numbers—it was about persistence, about refusing to let the voices of victims be silenced.

A Legacy of Scandal and Betrayal

For decades, the BBC has been linked to some of the most appalling abuse scandals in British history. From a predator like Jimmy Savile, to Rolf Harris, Gary Glitter, Duncan Bartlett, and beyond, these men operated within the walls of the BBC, protected by a system that looked the other way. So the protesters in Manchester made it clear: this isn’t just a tragic past—it’s an ongoing horror, maintained by a culture of complicity that has never fully been confronted.

Tom Blewitt, organiser of the Predator Awareness protest, stood before the crowd, his voice unwavering. “We’re here today to expose the BBC and their constant failings against children. They tell us they’ve learned their lesson from Jimmy Savile, but that’s a lie.”

The BBC’s scandals did not stop with Savile though. Protesters pointed to the most recent case of Huw Edwards, and demanded answers. “Explain why Huw Edwards still has a BBC pension,” Mr Blewitt demanded. There are allegations that, on the very day Edwards was suspended, following a sex scandal, he was out drinking with BBC bosses. The protesters see this as yet another example of the organisation protecting its own rather than holding wrongdoers to account.

The injustice cuts deeper than past crimes. The BBC remains funded by everyday people, who, as Mr Blewitt put it, “go to work every single day and are forced to pay for a TV licence. If you don’t pay it, they knock on your doors. No one should be paying for that.”

For the victims, there is no justice.

“All the victims of Jimmy Savile have no justice and no closure. If the BBC bosses are prepared to cover up for monsters like them, they’re just as bad in my opinion.”

Among the demonstrators, a grandfather stood saying, “I cannot bear to see children suffering at the hands of the BBC.” These are people who have been fighting this fight for over a decade—tireless, unyielding, and unwilling to accept silence as an answer.

A Protest Met With Indifference and Barriers

Although the numbers at yesterday’s protest were not large, the determination was immense. Protesters stood firm, knowing their rights and refusing to be moved. Yet, BBC security personnel—rather than simply letting the demonstration take place—intervened and did whatever they could to disrupt the peaceful gathering with threats that protesters were causing criminal damage.

The reality of MediaCity was not lost on the protesters. Unlike Broadcasting House in London, MediaCity is privately owned, separate from Manchester Council, allowing the BBC to shield itself behind private security. But even within that bubble, truth can still reach people—one security guard, visibly shaken, admitted that he had endured similar abuse to one of the speakers. As we’ve seen time and time again in our own lives and those we’ve served over the last 20 years, most people will only truly care about an issue if they’ve been affected by it directly or indirectly.

Despite the obstacles, the message was clear: the BBC can try to ignore this, but they won’t make it go away.

The Right to Protest—And the BBC’s Chilling Silence

There is always debate about the effectiveness of protests. But what was striking was the BBC’s reaction—not outrage, not engagement, but sheer indifference. Protesters noted how the organisation seemed to care more about the residue left by tape on their windows than the issue of child abuse. No BBC representative came down to speak to them. No acknowledgment, no response. Just silence.

Mr Blewitt turned his anger directly toward the BBC, his words carrying the weight of countless victims.

“The BBC—mark my words, one day you will face justice. Every single one of you BBC bosses, we will not stop this fight until every single victim gets their justice, every single perpetrator at the BBC who has been involved in this gets locked up, and all the BBC bosses listening from that building up there, we will not stop until you are brought to justice as well.”

The BBC’s Strategy: Smear and Silence

History has shown that those who stand up to powerful institutions are often branded as extremists. Yesterday’s protesters expect no different. “You dare to stand up to authority, and these people working in these buildings will brand you far-right thugs. We are not far-right to stand up for our children,” Mr Blewitt declared.

The BBC’s refusal to report on grooming gangs was another central grievance. “Panorama constantly lies about organisations that stand up to YOU. You constantly fail to tell the truth.” He continued, “You don’t report on the grooming gangs. Children have died at the hands of abusers, and the police turn a blind eye.”

The momentum is growing. The question remains—how long can the BBC ignore the people like Tom at Predator Awareness, and other members of the public like him who are increasingly demanding justice?

A Call to Action—Because This Fight Is Far From Over

This protest is just the beginning. Predator Awareness is planning events across the UK, self-funding their efforts, pushing forward despite the odds. But they know they cannot do this alone. Protesters are calling on others—researchers, activists, legal experts—to come forward, to stand with them.

A new conversation is beginning: who wants to be involved in a national class-action lawsuit against the BBC?

Yesterday was the first time this idea was raised with the public, and the response was overwhelming—every single person spoken to was in favour. There is a growing realisation that individual voices alone are not enough. Much needed institutions like the BBC, social services, and the police must be held to account where there is tyranny and corruption. This fight needs collective strength.
